Last Term, 23 of our remarkable Year 11 students stepped up to make a difference, participating in the 2024 Anglicare Sleep Out. We were proud to yet again join hundreds of other high school students at Optus Stadium for a night to raise funds to help Anglicare WA in its goal of eliminating homelessness.
Raising awareness about homelessness
The Anglicare Sleep Out is a powerful event that brings communities together to raise awareness about homelessness. Participants spend a night sleeping outdoors, experiencing a glimpse of the challenges faced by those less fortunate. This immersive experience fosters empathy and drives action, with funds raised supporting vital services for people without homes. It’s a night of solidarity, storytelling, and a call to action, reminding us of the importance of compassion and support for those in need.
Rallying together for change
Together, the girls raised an incredible $9507, showing their commitment to supporting homeless youth in Western Australia and placing us in the top 10 fundraisers. Students participated in a simulation of the difficulties faced by the 3000 young people sleeping rough every night before rolling out a yoga mat or a piece of cardboard and spending the night just trying to get some shut eye.
More than just an event
This Sleepout was more than just an event; it was a powerful reminder of the privilege of having a roof over our heads and the hardships faced by thousands of young people in our state.
“The Anglicare Sleepout was a truly eye-opening experience,” says Neve, a Year 11 student who attended the event. “We took part in a homelessness simulation, where we were split into groups and separated from our friends, pushing many of us out of our comfort zones. The simulation showed how easily someone can end up homeless and gave us a firsthand glimpse into the hardships of living on the streets. As we settled to sleep on our cardboard boxes, we thought the experience was over. However, we soon realised the simulation was still ongoing when we were awoken several times by bright lights, sirens and alarms. This unexpected twist gave us a deeper understanding of the constant challenges those sleeping on the streets face. It was a powerful reminder of the difference our donations can make.”
Congratulations to the Anglicare Ambassadors on their phenomenal efforts. We look forward to supporting the sleepout again next year.
